What to expect between 12-18 months
- Feeding self with fingers
- First molars and canine (cuspids) appearing
- Giving up bottle for sippy cup
- Talking (using single words)
Congratulations, your baby is a year old! It’s amazing how many new skills she has
learned. All that practice is paying off and your 12-18 month old is skillfully
using her forefingers and thumb to pick up small foods and feed herself. She may
want to hold her own baby spoon and cup now. This can lead to some messy meals,
but remember that this is how she learns to feed herself.
In the beginning, she is learns to use her tongue, lips, palate and any new teeth
to make sounds. Between 12 and 18 months, she will practice stringing one or two
words together to describe what she sees, feels, thinks and wants.
By 12 months, your baby should have cut her first baby teeth. By 18 months, she
may have her first molars and canine (longer teeth). Keep her baby teeth healthy
with a baby toothbrush.
See what’s on the horizon for your baby.
Take a look back.
